If you notice that Your Tires Are Wearing On The Inside it is a good idea to have the Suspension on your vehicle checked over and find out if the Ball Joints are worn or the King Pin Bushings are worn out in your commercial vehicle. When they wear out it allows the top of the tire to tip in and that is what wears the inside of the tire out and the rest of the tire is good yet. The fix for a light duty vehicle is to replace the Ball Joints and then do a Four Wheel Alignment. On a Heavy Vehicle you have to take the Steer Axle apart and Replace the Bushings and King Pins and do a Three Axle Alignment. If you hear a squeaking sound while your turning the steering wheel back and forth that is the Ball Joints or King Pin Bushings that are dry and will need to be replaced. Some Ball Joints can be greased others are sealed. It all depends on the application. If it’s white that will be caused by coolant leaking into a cylinder. If the smoke color is bluish white and burns your eyes this is caused by excess fuel in a cylinder. We will look at the reasons for White Smoke first. A leaking Cylinder Head Gasket could be a cause of this. Pay attention to how long the White Smoke lasts. If it’s gone in a couple minutes the head gasket is leaking when the engine is cold, then when you start your Diesel Engine it will Blow White Smoke and be gone in a couple minutes. If you drop the Transmission Pan to change the Transmission Fluid, you will only get about 25% of the old fluid out of the Transmission. We will look at Why Does My Truck Have A DEF System first. The main reason late model Diesel Trucks and Cars have a DEF System is to control the amount of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) that the vehicle emits. The EPA has mandated that the OEM’s had to control the Emissions that the Diesel Engine emits. The DEF Fluid gets injected into the exhaust stream before the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit. The Def Fluid goes through a mixing tube and enters the SCR unit, and the DEF Fluid reacts with the SCR and reduces the NOx and lowers the emissions coming out of the tailpipe.

When the Service DEF System pops up on the dash with the warning that you have a certain mileage before the vehicle goes into Derate the cause can be as simple as bad DEF Fluid or a computer that needs reprogrammed to the latest software. When this message pops up we recommend that you bring the vehicle as soon as possible if you keep driving it will go into a 5mph Derate at that point the vehicle will need to be towed. There is a diagnostic process you must follow to fix these problems correctly. It starts with using a scan tool to check codes and checking for a computer reflash depending on the codes in the ECM is where you start the process. this message can be caused by bad DEF Fluid, NOx sensors, DEF Heaters, DEF Injector or the SCR unit failing. My recommendation is to change the engine oil more often and that will help your engine run cleaner and not build up with deposits inside the engine.
