A Brief History of Western Star

Western Star Trucks was founded in 1967 as a division of the White Motor Company. Initially called White Western Star, the company built its trucks in Kelowna, British Columbia, focusing on rugged heavy-duty applications like logging and oilfield work. Western Star quickly earned a reputation for durable, custom-built trucks and for prioritizing driver comfort, recognizing that the driver is a key asset. In 2000, Western Star was acquired by Daimler (Freightliner’s parent company), which helped introduce modern engineering and technology into the brand. The classic Western Star 4900 model became a workhorse over the decades, known for its reliability in the toughest conditions. In recent years, Western Star expanded its lineup with new models like the aerodynamic 5700XE for on-highway use and advanced vocational trucks. Today, with over 50 years of experience, Western Star continues to produce some of the industry’s most robust and customizable Class 8 trucks.

Western Star Today

Western Star offers various on-highway and vocational trucks. These include:

On-Highway

  • 57X: The 57X is Western Star’s newest on-highway tractor, featuring a sleek aerodynamic design to maximize fuel efficiency. It comes equipped with the latest safety technologies and a premium cabin, providing long-haul operators with both comfort and performance.
  • 4900: The 4900 is Western Star’s classic model often used for both highway and vocational duties. With its traditional long-nose styling and heavy-duty construction, the 4900 offers reliable performance and can be heavily customized for specialized jobs or owner-operator preferences.

Vocational

  • 49X: The 49X is a next-generation vocational truck built for severe-duty tasks. It features a lightweight yet strong chassis, modern safety features, and is designed for easy upfit, making it ideal for construction, logging, and other tough applications.
  • 47X: Slightly smaller than the 49X, the 47X is engineered for vocational jobs that require a lighter weight truck. It’s well-suited for municipal services and construction duties where maneuverability and payload are key, while still delivering Western Star’s trademark durability.
  • 6900: The 6900 is an ultra heavy-duty Western Star model built for the most demanding off-road and heavy-haul tasks. With its massive frame and powerful engine options, the 6900 can handle extreme loads in mining, oilfield, or oversized transport operations.
